Unit 22

Unit 22: Single Camera Technique Notes 16\09\19
- Assessed in evaluating, planning of SCP (single camera production), production
- Most films use SCP unless filming an expensive shot e.g. explosion
- Advntgs: Easy to film in small spaces, cheap to operate and small crew, easy to deal with aesthetics
- Disadvantgs: Takes longer than MCP because o multiple takes, easier to cross the 18- degree linge, often means you'll film out of sequence and cause actors to lose their flow, MCP has better coverage and catches actors' bests, you don't get as much coverage.
- SCP TV Shows: The Office, GOT, Prison Break
MCP TV Shows: EastEnders, Sports, BBC

Single Camera Formats
Series - Each episode of a series have self-contained narrative meaning they have a defined ending. E.g. Sherlock

Serial - The narrative of a serial runs over numerous episodes, with each Ep usually ending on a cliff-hanger so you want to see more, Soaps are usually like this. E.g. Good Omens

Single Drama - A one-off TV dramas which has its own self-contained narrative. Made for TV films might be considered single drama. E.g. Black Mirror

TASK 1

Task 1: Understanding 'single camera production'

a) Define 'single camera production':
A scene shot with a single camera

b) Identify the advantages and disadvantages of single camera production (refer to examples where you can):

Advantages
Disadvantages
- Easy to film in small spaces
- Cheap to operate and small crew
- Easy to deal with aesthetics

Takes longer than MCP because o multiple takes,
- Easier to cross the 18- degree linge,
- Often means you'll film out of sequence and cause actors to lose their flow,
- MCP has better coverage and catches actors' bests,
- You don't get as much coverage.

c) How does multi-camera differ to single camera productions?

MCP are different from SCP because MCP only shoots their scenes once from multiple angles therefore, they only have to shoot the scene once whereas, SCP the scene has to be retaken and this becomes time consuming

d) List 3 examples of single camera shows/films (aim for different genres)

1) The Office
2) Prison Break
3) Game of Thrones

List 3 examples of multi-camera shows (aim for different genres)

1) The Big Bang Theory
2) Brooklyn Nine Nine
